Robert Pope

R. Darrell Pope, age 66, passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2021 at home in Kannapolis, NC.  Darrell was born on June 23, 1955, in Charlotte, NC to Lewis and Alma Pope.  He grew up in Charlotte and lived in Cabarrus County for 42 years.  A graduate of UNCC with a B.A. degree in Psychology, Darrell worked in the sales and service industry for 50 years, with nearly 30 years in financial services and insurance.  In addition, he did volunteer work in children’s ministries and senior adult ministries at Concord First Assembly (now Multiply Church) for 27 years. Darrell was also part of the team at Hartsell Funeral Home, where he considered it a ministry to serve grieving families.

Anyone who met Darrell talks about his infectious smile and his love for God, family, and friends. He never met a stranger and had a passion to serve others. Darrell was an avid music collector.  He enjoyed all genres of music and had endless knowledge of music from the 1960s and 1970s. In his spare time, Darrell enjoyed spending time with family and hanging out in his music room.

Darrell has been married to Marvel Jones Pope, a minister on staff at Multiply Church, formally cfa, for 42 years. They have three daughters: Dara Docusen (David), Tori Burgdorff (Doug), and Tracy Breslin (David). They have five grandchildren, Max, Mary, Jack, Drew, and Ben. They brought him great joy. Darrell is survived by his father, Lewis Pope and his wife, Pauline, and his two sisters, Donna Martin (Ben), and Gail Hoffman (Mike), and his nieces and nephews, all whom he loved dearly.

A memorial service will be held on July 20, 2021 at Multiply Church (Whidden Auditorium) at 11:00a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45a.m. Rev. Forest Jones (brother-in-law) and Dr. Rick Ross (their longtime pastor) will be officiating the service.
