Obituary

Mary Lassiter Hill Garber passed away on January 15, 2023.  She was a native of Albemarle, being born on April 9, 1923, to Dr. William Isaac Hill and Jessie Lassiter Hill.
Mary graduated from Albemarle High School in 1940 and then graduated Meredith College in 1944.  After graduation she began working for Texaco Oil Company as a research chemist in Beacon, New York.


While working at Texaco, she met Max Richard Garber and they were married on October 12, 1946, in Albemarle.  They moved to Washington, D. C. where Max entered Georgetown University Dental School from which he graduated in 1951.  They relocated to Albemarle in 1955.


Mary has been a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Albemarle, serving in many roles.  She served in the church nursery for approximately 30 years and later worked in the church library.  She was a faithful worker for many years in Vacation Bible School.


She was a devoted member of the Hawthorne Garden Club in Albemarle, having served as President.  She extended her service to the North Carolina State Garden Club as a regional and state leader.


Mary was a dedicated member of the Stanly County Hospital Auxiliary. She served that organization as its President.  She volunteered for several decades at the Stanly County Hospital as a “Pink Lady” in the hospital’s volunteer program.


She and Max have four children: Ronald Hill Garber and wife, Karen Almond Garber of Raleigh, North Carolina, Brian Howard Garber and wife, Tammy Ball Garber of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mary Christine Garber of Greensboro, North Carolina and Kenneth Richard Garber and wife, Elizabeth Taylor Garber of High Point, North Carolina.  She has seven grandchildren: Mary Garber McLaurin, Richmond, Virginia, Lauren Hill Garber, Neterland, Colorado,  Vanessa Garber, Jonesboro, Arkansas, Olivia Garber, Memphis, Tennessee, Andrew Thompson Garber, Statesville, North Carolina, Ryan Taylor Garber, Annapolis, Maryland and Isaac Preston Garber, High Point, North Carolina. They also have two, great grandchildren Malcolm Garber McLaurin, Richmond, Virginia and Wesley Marshall McLaurin, Richmond, Virginia.


A service of witness to the resurrection will be held, Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 12:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, 202 North Second Street, Albemarle.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 202 North Second Street, Albemarle, North Carolina, 28001 or Hospice of Stanly & The Uwharrie, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, North Carolina, 28001.
