Joann Huntley

Joann Sides Huntley, 85, of Harrisburg, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

Joann was born January 29, 1935 in Montgomery County to the late Charlie Harris and the late Virginia Harris.
She was also preceded in death by first husband, Bobby Joe Sides; daughter, Terri Sides Spradley;  2nd Husband, William Huntley; seven deceased siblings, Mary "Chirpy" Smith, Betty Lemons, Sue Brown, Bob Harris, Bud Harris, Barbara Hunsucker, and Ginger Hunsucker.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 am - 11:00 am, Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am in the Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. The service will be officiated by Rev. Dave McGuirk. Burial will follow at the Carolina Memorial Park, Harrisburg.

Survivors include son, Kent (Kimberly) Sides of Harrisburg; daughter, Stacy (Peter) Gherardi of Harrisburg; two sisters, Kay  Howard of Columbia, SC, and Martha Todd of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Nichole (Brian) Sellers, Seth (Katherine) Spradley, Molly (Scottie) Spradley, Brittany (Nicholas) Watts, Blake (Courtney) Sides, Taylor (Jennifer) Gherardi; six great grandchildren, Regan Sellers, Adam Sellers, Jenna Rice, Makayla Rice Charles Spradley, and Nev Spradley.

While she was a homemaker, she was President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Harrisburg Volunteer Fire Department and Assistant Chief of the first Volunteer Rescue in Harrisburg, where she was one of the first volunteer female EMTs in the state of N.C.  The first rescue squad was funded by selling hot dogs at the fire department on Saturdays.

She joined the staff of Dr. Norman Beam and worked as his dental assistant until she retired.
