Elmer Sanders

May 2, 1942 — August 12, 2022

Elmer D. Sanders, 80, of Midland, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Friday, August 12, 2022.

Elmer was born May 2, 1942, in Aiken, SC, to the late Herman Eugene Medlin and the late Mildred Laverne Davis Medlin.

Elmer was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps who had so much love and life to give.

Often times you’d find him on the open waters with his son-in-law, Duane Burry, fishing all day long, and telling all the stories of his life. He loved all things creative such as building model airplanes and cars, coloring, reading, drawing, and so much more. His entertainment consisted of all, and anything sport or race-related. Every Sunday that was race day, he was in front of that tv, fully immersed in it. Nothing stopped him from watching his NASCAR races. Watching the race while coloring in his new coloring book, and drinking Harriett’s sweet tea was a typical Sunday afternoon for him.

Elmer, often known as ‘Pops’ or ‘Moe’, was filled with so much love towards his family and friends. He was always so proud of his granddaughter, Caitlyn Burry, who graduated high school in June. Seeing her graduate was his most sought-after experience and thankfully, he got to see that through.

Elmer was always a talker, but you’d never get tired of his never-ending stories; his star football player days, the time he was a brick mason, the time he built his own house, his time in Vietnam- and every single small story in between. Through it all, thick and thin, Elmer was a fighter. Even now, with him gone, his fighting spirit lives on within the family.

Survivors include beloved wife of 55 years, Harriett W. Sanders; daughter, Cindy (Duane) Burry of Midland; daughter, Maggie Sanders of Midland; and granddaughter, Caitlyn Burry.

A memorial service in celebration of Elmer's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at the Sanders residence.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial donations may be made to DAV.
