Rev. Dr. Charles Wayne Helms, 69 years of age and a native of Oakboro, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Mr. Helms was born June 16, 1943 in Stanly County to the late Capius Preston Helms and Minnie Mae Long Helms. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather. While serving as a minister for 48 years, he pastored churches in Georgia, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, and Maryland. He also evangelized in North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 22, at the Church of God, Main Street in Oakboro. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Danny Long and Rev. Marshall Adcock. Burial will follow in the Oakboro Cemetery, 1397 North Main Street in Oakboro. At other times, the family will meet at the home of his daughter, Tana, at 12072 Hazard Road, Oakboro. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Judy Gail Whitley Helms of the home; his son, Todd Helms and his wife, Darlene, of Stanfield; his daughters, Tana Huneycutt and her husband, Paul, of Oakboro, Terita Hatley and her husband, Reid, of Albemarle, and Terry Cross and her husband, Charles of Tennessee; his brothers, Roy F. Helms of Oakboro and Hal Helms of Mint Hill; his sisters, Ramelle Hartsell of Concord and Ruby Huneycutt of Huntersville; his aunt, Addie Long of Marshville; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
