The funeral service will proceed in the Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Don Burleyson. Burial will follow at the Smith Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery at 25711 Old School Road, Oakboro, NC.

It was Friday, January 6 of 1939 when a precious baby girl entered the world. Myrtle Lambert Almond and Daniel Monroe Almond welcomed sweet Carrie, baby #8.

Poor was an understatement. Life was not easy during that time. But she would persevere. As years passed Carrie found her passion…reading. She and her best friend Martha could often be found on the steps of Ridgecrest school, eating their crackers while Carrie read aloud to Martha. That friendship would remain as they became teens, writing letters to one another about their crushes. Although an exact date isn’t known, sometime in 1955 Carrie met Ralph at Running Creek Church. That is where they fell in love.

Carrie and Ralph would write letters weekly to one another, depending on the mailman as their source of communication until Sunday at church. As per 67 year old love letters, Ralph loved “Pinkie” and would court her and marry her on a Friday in 1956 on her birthday. They welcomed their first child in December of that year. Carrie was a homemaker, bringing 6 children into a loving home. But tragedy struck in June of 1976 when the love of her life left the world. With 6 children ranging in age from almost 2 to 19, she was lost. But she would persevere. Although she dropped out of school at the age of 16 she was very clever in so many areas. Carrie could take a handful of ingredients and make the most delicious comfort food you ever did taste. No one could make chicken stew quite like her, or even a grilled cheese, which she called a cheese toast. Her chocolate milk was made from cocoa and sugar and whole milk and it was the best tasting thing EVER! She would babysit, clean houses and volunteer at school. Carrie welcomed family and friends into her home, stretching any food and sharing anything she had.

If we thought her mothering skills were top notch, it didn’t compare to her grandmothering expertise. Carrie’s heart made room for each and every grandchild. She kept her rocking chair squeaking, putting babies to sleep at the drop of a dime, with her rendition of Mr. Sandman.

Carrie was blessed with many good years on Earth, until Alzheimer’s entered the picture. Even then, traces of her remained. She never wavered in her love of children, the color pink and her favorite song “Amazing Grace.”

Carrie leaves behind 2 sisters Francis “Cooter” Eudy (Lamar) of Statesville, and Gaynelle Thompson of Albemarle. 6 children: Karen Lowder (Rodney) of Albemarle, Jeff Hinson of Marshville, Rocky Hinson (Lisa) of Marshville, Lisa Broadaway of Polkton, Shannon Hinson of Oakboro, and Dana Allen (Shane) of Peachland. 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Myrtle, her loving husband Ralph Landon, her siblings, Virginia, Annie Lee, Clyde, J.D, Cliff, Ray, and Bobby.

To honor Carrie’s memory, and the amazing human that she was, please send a card or visit nursing home residents. Buy that mom a bag of diapers. Feed the birds. Read the book. Feed a stray cat. Cook some chicken stew. Attempt homemade chocolate milk. Live, laugh, love, and for goodness sakes, persevere…
