Willie Thomas Lewis, Sr., 83, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026. He was born on October 25, 1942, in Windsor, Virginia, to the late Emma Lewis and Thomas Lewis.
Willie spent his early years in Virginia before moving to New York in his twenties. There, he worked as a dedicated custodian within the public school system for many years until his retirement. After retiring, he relocated to Florida, and later made his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he remained until he was called home.
Willie was a man of strong faith who loved God deeply. He had a passion for cars, music, basketball, and staying informed by watching the news. Above all, he cherished his family-especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
He will be remembered for his charming personality, his kindness, and his polite nature. Willie had a stubborn streak, but it was part of what made him who he was. You knew you were truly part of his circle if he gave you a nickname-a small but meaningful sign of his love.
In his free time, Willie enjoyed fishing, working on cars, and being a handyman around the house. He took pride in working with his hands and found joy in fixing and building things.
Willie leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Diane Lewis; his sister, Katherine Joyner; his children, Shawn Gillyard of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Freeman Pettaway of Bronx, New York, Angelina Pettaway of Bronx, New York, and Annette Bowman of Charlotte, North Carolina; and his stepson, Quintin Wallace of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, along with extended family and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shown love, support, and condolences during this time. Though Willie is no longer with us physically, his spirit will live on through all who knew and loved him.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
