Virginia Strickhouser

August 18, 1945 — June 11, 2023

Harrisburg

Virginia Elizabeth Strickhouser, 77, of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Sunday, June 11, 2023, after a brief battle with Covid pneumonia.

In 1945, Virginia was born to the late James Renwick Wilkes Jr. and the late Elizabeth Triplett Wilkes.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Renwick Wilkes III and cousin, Joyce Kincaid.  She is survived by her children, Wendy Brantley (Artie Craig) and Robert Strickhouser; grandchildren Cameron, Erica, Meredith and Adam Brantley; twin brother Charles Wilkes (Shelia); cousins, Clayton Ramsey, Sue Ann Gibbs, Amanda Triplett, Richard Triplett; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Virginia was a Charlotte native.  After graduating from Garinger High School, she received a Nursing degree from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing then a Bachelor’s in Nursing from Queens College.  In 1971, she began her nursing career and family in Raleigh, NC where many priceless friendships were established. In 1986, she relocated to Harrisburg, NC to be closer to family.  After over 54 years as a Registered Nurse, she retired from Presbyterian-Novant Hospital.  Virginia continued providing care for others through the Fall of 2022 when she was diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer.  Fortunately, she never had to suffer from the end stages of that disease.

Virginia was a loving Mother and Grandmother, kind friend, witty coworker and compassionate nurse.  But, she was most known for her positive spirit, selflessness and generosity.  She always put others before herself.  She never met a stranger and accepted everyone into her “family.”  Virginia was a devoted caregiver inside and outside her home.  She continually gave her time, energy and resources to help anyone in need for any reason.

Virginia’s greatest blessings were her family and friends.  She was passionate about maintaining relationships and being present for every occasion regardless of distance or time.  Virginia was a believer in written correspondence. She sent cards for any and every occasion, even if it was barely legible.  Her life was full and we were all blessed to be part of it.
