Valerie Hammond

Valerie, also known as Val, Mama & Granny, died at age 82 at her home on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

She was born November 11, 1942, in East Sussex, England to the late John Daniel & Nellie Vera Hemsley. She lived in England until 11/12/1963, when she flew to America and became the bride of Randall Hammond on 11/16/1963.

Valerie worked as a telephonist with the Telephone Exchange (GPO), at St. James Court in London and during her enlistment with the Royal Air Force at the R.A.F. Hospital Wroughton.

Valerie loved being a homemaker & raising her girls before becoming a teacher’s assistant at Bethel Elementary School & Harrisburg Elementary school, working with exceptional children. Valerie was a beloved Sunday School teacher at Bethel Church in Midland for almost 40 years and is remembered for the “homework” she assigned and high expectations she had for her students.

Valerie enjoyed cross-stitching, bible study, playing canasta with friends, feeding hummingbirds, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Mason in 1998 and beloved husband Randall in 2008.

A Memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, September 13th at Bethel Church in Midland, NC with Jeremy Brackett officiating.
