Emblem

Dr. Thomas Aldon Baucom, 87, of Midland, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024, at home.

Dr. Baucom was born January 9, 1937, in Fairview, NC, to the late William Clarence Baucom and the late Etta Viola Helms Baucom. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Howard Heath Baucom, Donald Ray Baucom, James Clarence Baucom, and Melvin A. Baucom; and sisters, Edith Walker, Linda Baucom and Myrtle Mullis.

Born at home, Dr. Baucom attended Fairview School for 12 years. His early years were filled with farm work and school. Dr. Baucom completed his undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University. He then studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning his degree in Dentistry in 1961. While in dental school, Dr. Baucom wed Lois Ferguson, who he met at Clear Creek Baptist Church, where he and Mrs. Baucom have been lifelong members. Dr. and Mrs. Baucom moved to Florida after graduation, where Dr. Baucom served as a United States Navy dentist at Naval Air Station Pensacola. After receiving an honorable discharge, Dr. and Mrs. Baucom returned to the Midland area to start his dental practice in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Baucom loved being outside and working on his farm when he wasn’t practicing dentistry and had a wide range of interests. He loved farming, flying, shore and deep-sea fishing, hunting and tending to his farm animals. Dr. Baucom set a goal to retire at 50 years of age, so in 1987 he left dentistry behind and became a full-time gentleman farmer. He loved traveling and spending time with his family at Holden Beach as much as possible.

Dr. Baucom will be most remembered as being very humble and generous. He never wanted to take credit for the things he did for others and preferred that the focus not be on him. He loved his family greatly and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, church family, and friends. If someone wanted to take a plane ride, needed help, or asked his opinion, he always obliged and enjoyed being able to help. Most of all, Dr. Baucom was a loving husband, dad, granddad, and brother.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Lois Ferguson Baucom of Midland, NC; son, Christopher Aldon Baucom and wife, Diane, of Cary, NC; son, Thomas Aldon Baucom II, and wife, Arti, of Fairview, NC; daughter, Nancy B. Matchell and husband, Christian, of Midland; 4 grandchildren, Joshua Aldon Baucom, Daniel Christopher Baucom, Ashley Grace Baucom, and Angelina Nicole Baucom; 3 step-grandchildren, Charles Matchell, Caroline Whiteman, and Ashley Pickel; sister, Dorothy Maples of Monroe, NC; sister, Mo-he Arrington of Greensboro, NC; sister, Wanda Rowell of Monroe, NC; sister, Kay McManus and husband, Daniel, of Lexington, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
