Suggie and Kenneth Christenbury

Concord

Kenneth and Suggie Christenbury, of Concord, have passed away peacefully at home with family by their side. Grace "Suggie" Christenbury, 92, ended her journey at sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Kenneth Lee Christenbury, 95, ended his journey at sunrise on Saturday, September 20, 2025. We are sad, but rejoice, as they are together in eternal life.

Kenneth was born August 3, 1930 in Cabarrus County, NC, to the late Wood and Sue Christenbury. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Paul B. Christenbury, Jenna Sue Taylor, and Jo Ann Austin Jones.

Suggie was born October 31, 1932 in Mecklenburg County, NC, to the late Luren and Grace Wiggins. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Kathleen Bustle, Bill Wiggins, Ruth Beard, Calvin Wiggins, Ruby Little and Hazel Barnette. She was the last of her family as she was the youngest child.

Ken and Sug were married on April 20, 1952, and celebrated their 73rd anniversary this year. They were both members of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. Ken was a lifelong member and very involved in the annual Mallard Creek BBQ. Sug was a wonderful ambassador for the church and received the Honorary Life Membership for Presbyterian Women in 2016. People from around the world have visited "The Garden" and she never missed an opportunity to invite them to visit Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church if they didn't have a home church. She always mentioned the annual church BBQ as well. Sug was a member of the kitchen crew for Youth Club for over 25 years. She was famously known for her Thanksgiving dressing and her delicious coconut cake.

Sug graduated with the last class of Huntersville High School in 1950. Ken graduated from W.R. Odell High School in Cabarrus County.

Ken retired from City of Charlotte Water Department while serving as Plant Engineer in January 1993. He had his own business, Christenbury Repair Service, for several years following his retirement. He served as President and Farm Manager of Christenbury Farms for many years. Ken was a steward of Christenbury Farm land his entire life. He established a legacy that will benefit many. He always had a garden and wanted the rows laid off straight, so they would be easy to plow later on. Their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and on down the family line learned how to drive on his tractors, plus learned the necessity and the value of hard work. Ken operated "The Garden at Christenbury Farm" for many years having the roadside stand, where he and Sug never met a stranger. Besides the garden, Ken's hobby was photography. He had an extraordinary eye that captured the perfect landscape photo. He and Sug traveled the country to many locations to get the perfect video or photo. For many years, Ken would take his favorite photos and create an annual calendar for family and friends.

Ken and Sug spent a lifetime together and created quite a legacy. Gone but never forgotten.

Ken and Sug are survived by their daughters, Janet C. (Lynn) Mabry of Albemarle and Ann C. (Larry) Carroll of Concord; son, Paul L. (Stacy) Christenbury of Mooresville; three grandchildren, Justin Carroll of Concord, Summer C. (Zack) Klink of Charlotte, and Dylan Christenbury of Mooresville. Ken is also survived by brothers, Silas Ted Christenbury, Gerald Davis (Joyce) Christenbury, Edward Maxwell (Peggy) Christenbury; and sister, Sandra Kay (Darrell) Thomas; brothers-in-law, James Walter "Burr" Taylor and Ernie Jones. Ken and Sug are also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Hunter Roddey. They will be laid to rest in the church cemetery, following the service.

The Christenbury family would like to thank Kate Sigmon, their loving caregiver, for her love and compassion. They would also like to thank the Mallard Creek neighbors and "The Garden" friends for all they did for them over the years.
