Richard Elliot Berman, 77, of Mount Gilead, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Mr. Berman was born September 5, 1946 in Massachusetts to James Tobin Berman and Yvonne Leah Toireer Berman.
He was also preceded in death by brother, David Berman and sister, Thelma Berman Bailey.

Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Berman Viggiano of Deltona, FL; nephew, David Carmen Bailey of Edgewood, NM; nieces, Cheri Lynn Bailey Powers of Colorado Springs, CO & Bridget Berman of Denver, Colorado, nephew, Jimmy Berman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and brother-in-law, William Humphrey of Mt. Gilead, NC.

Richard was a Navy veteran who proudly served our country in the Viet Nam War aboard the USS Shangri-La aircraft carrier.

Richard worked for the Tandy Corporation for a number of years.  Later, he was employed by both State Farm Insurance and then by The Pearce Group Insurance Consultants based in Holly Springs, NC.

For the last couple of years of his life he was retired.

Richard decided to donate his remains to Eternal Reefs, Inc a charitable organization based in Sarasota, FL that specializes in working with Naval veterans who pass away.  Specifically, his ashes will be used to build an artificial reef that will be placed in the Atlantic Ocean to protect maritime sea life in the area. 

At his request, no memorial service will be held.
