Martha Hestikind

Martha Smith Hestikind, 78 years of age, formerly of Carolina Beach, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at her home in Locust. Martha was born September 16, 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late James Howard Smith and the late Mildred Pauline Baker Smith. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Mason and Bill Smith; and sister, Patricia Hoffman. There are no services at this time. The family will be gathering at the home. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Odean Orvall Hestikind of the home; daughters, Marsha Dry and husband Jack of Locust, and Cheryl Shue and husband Mark of Locust; sons, James Dean Hestikind of Charlotte, and Bob Hestikind and wife Lynn Pearson of Castle Hayne; niece, Allison Hoffman and husband Eric, and her sons, Scott and Craige of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Anthony Zupan, Allen Zupan, James Watts, Kelly Watts, Cory Travaglini, JD Jr., and Alden Hestikind; six great grandchildren; and special friend, Joyce Burchett of Charlotte. Martha graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1956. She received an ADN from Sacred Heart College, and a bachelors of Nursing from Wingate College. She also was a nursing instructor at Mercy School of Nursing, and long time employee of Mercy Hospital for 28 years and 8 years at Carolina's Medical Center. She loved golf, and has a hole-in-one at Green Meadows in Mt. Holly. She loved spending time at the beach, and was a former life guard at Carolina Beach. She loved sports of all kind, and was a dedicated East Carolina fan. Memorials may be made to Kure Memorial Lutheran Church, PO Box 1, Kure Beach, NC 28449.
