Margie Dora Rogers Harwood Lowder, 94 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. Mrs. Lowder was born April 15, 1919 in McDowell County to the late William James Rogers and the late Carrie Mae Corn Rogers. She was preceded in death by husbands, Edward Green Harwood and James Lowder; one son, James Graham Harwood; and one sister, Eunice Rogers Pyatt. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., on Monday, December 23, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church in Albemarle. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Rev. Jim Yow and Rev. Clyde Penry will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. The family meeting place will be the home of her son, Bill Harwood, in Badin. Survivors include one son, William David "Bill" Harwood and wife, Anne Kelley Harwood, of Badin; daughter in law, Betty Holt Harwood of Blowing Rock; grandsons, David Harwood and wife, Gina, of Blowing Rock, Rodney Harwood of Park City, Ut; granddaughters, Julie Harwood Scull and husband, Rob, of Wilmington, Leigh Harwood Gise and husband, Scott, of Brisbane, Australia, Caroline Harwood Semon of Charlotte; and nine great grandchildren. After attending Lenior Rhyne College, as a young bride Margie worked at Albemarle Savings and Loan, when it was located next to the Albemarle Hotel. Mrs. Lowder was an active member of Central United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. She was active for years in the DAR and in the American War Mothers. For 49 years she was a licensed financial planner for Waddell and Reed. Margie was co-ordinator for Terry Sanford in twelve counties during his terms as Governor of NC. She was historian for the NC State PTA for twelve years. Margie helped to organize the Stanly County Cancer Society and served as secretary. Margie was the first woman in Stanly County to run for public office which was Clerk of Court.
