Leo Max Smith, 92 years of age, of Kannapolis, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015.
Mr. Smith was born December 18, 1922 in Union County, North Carolina to Grover Cleveland Smith and Blanche Stegall. He was preceded in death by sons Everett and Rick, four sisters and three brothers.
Some of his favorite memories were of his childhood on the farm. He served 32 months in the US Air Force in England during War World II as a tail gunner on a B-24 and completed 40 missions. He was the founder and operator of the Thrifty Food Centers in Wingate and Richmond County. Idle time was not his friend.
A graveside service will be on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Lakeland Memorial Park on Lancaster Highway in Monroe, officiated by Dr. Derrill Smith.
Survivors include wife, Mae G. Smith of Kannapolis, NC, son Andy Smith (Kathy) of Marshville, daughter Beth Edwards (Robert) of Fort Mill, SC, stepdaughter Janie Cox (Mitchell) of Concord, stepson Charles Scarboro (Sonia) of Chapin, SC, 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Humane Society of Cabarrus County or Tucker Hospice in Kannapolis.
