Joseph Pinkney Misenheimer Jr, 96, of Concord passed away Monday, March 9, 2026, at home surrounded by loved ones. It is without doubt that he was ushered in by those who went before him, on his way to meet Jesus.
Joseph was born February 9, 1930, in North Carolina to the late Lillie Talbert Misenheimer and Joseph Pinkney Misenheimer Sr. His stories of growing up were full of excitement, humble times, and most of all, love. This was reflected in his kindness, witty jokes, and inability to sit still. After graduating from Concord High School in 1950, his avid devotion to his community, family, and the Boston Red Sox shaped most of his adult years.
While enlisted in the Air Force, he noted being stationed in Anchorage, Alaska for some time as well as Rome, NY. His dedication continued after coming home, as he quickly followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Concord Fire Department in 1955. He spoke so fondly of his fellow firemen and was always happy to share a story or show off his name in a publication of a Firefighters Magazine. Fellow firefighter John Erie also noted that “ was known to be one of the best people to work with”. Joe retired as Assistant Fire Chief in 1988.
Remaining active, he gave much of his time to assisting those in need within the community. Whether it was mowing lawns for those who were unable, helping with the community food truck, or running hot dogs for the church hot dog sale on Fridays - you’d always catch him outside. On Sundays he’d lead his family to Church at Kerr Street United Methodist where he was a proud member.
He was proceeded in death by those he loved most; the love of his life, Sarah Sapp Misenheimer, his son, Joseph “Joey” Misenhimer III, and his two daughters, Francis Woods and Tammy Lee Misenheimer. We can only imagine the glorious reunion of this beautiful family.
He was also proceeded in death by his beloved brother, Gene Misenheimer and his wife Mildred Misenheimer, as well as his sister, Margaret Lackey and her husband Leon Lackey.
While we find comfort in them being together again and Joe being healed (dementia), there are many who remain whose life’s he shaped tremendously that will miss him so. His sisters, Betty Morgan, Janie Washam, and Nancy Farris; granddaughters, Tammy Nance, Brandi Misenheimer-Brill, Ashley Phillips, and Courtney Hucks. In addition, “Paw- Paw” as he was lovingly called, he also leaves behind great-grandchildren of whom he loved dearly; Lauren Woods, Makayla and Breanna Nance (Tammy); Tyler, Harper and Norah Brill (Brandi); Costa and Denver Phillips (Ashley); Skylyn, Cartier, and June Manley (Courtney).
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Forest Hill United Methodist Church, Concord, NC. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am, officiated by Reverend Wes Judy.
