Joseph Carter

Joseph Edison Carter, 89 years of age, of New London, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home.

Mr. Carter was born March 10, 1928 in Stanly County to the late Herbert O. Carter and the late Ada Russell Carter. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice Rebecca Carter; brother, Otha Carter and sister, Abrose Carter Speight.

Joe served in the US Army after World War II. He became an Albemarle Police Officer and then became a Deputy Sheriff in Stanly County. Afterwards and until his retirement, he served in the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division as a Criminal Investigator focusing on the manufacture and sale of illegal alcohol. Joe also owned Alcart Corp, a local solid waste management company, for 23 years. During his retirement years, he authored two popular books, "Damn the Allegators" and "Shortcuts to Justice". He also spent most of his time serving with the Albemarle Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America and numerous other civic and charitable organizations.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM , Monday, January 29, 2018  at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, January 30, 2018  at 1:00 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel officiated by Pastor Branan Hooven. Entombment will follow at Mt. Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 40253 Mt. Creek Road, New London

Survivors include sons, Philip Carter and wife Pam of Midland and David Carter and wife Bernadita of Fairfax, VA; step son, Bobby Purgason and wife Katie of Taylorsville; step daughter, Lynn Purgason of New London; grandchildren, Shelley, Clint, Joseph and Philip; step granddaughter, Lexi;  great grandchildren, Maggie and Calintz; sister, Marcella Crook Hatley; and brother, Jack Carter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County and the Uwharrie, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.
