John Thomas Eddins, Jr. died Saturday, September 12, 2015 as the result of suicide. For the last 20 years John lived with multiple chronic physical and mental health issues. He valiantly fought to survive them, especially the last three years, as he lived with more acute challenges. He was born on September 17, 1953 to Lethia Spencer and John Thomas Eddins Sr., who preceded him in death.
John graduated from South Stanly High School, attended NC State and graduated from Guilford Community College. Every Christmas, he got a gas powered airplane and enjoyed flying it with his dad. He pursued that love by actualizing his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. John flew planes both for private companies and for American Eagle.
John was loved by his surviving sister and brother, Miriam Eddins Fahrer of Chapel Hill and Jeff Eddins of Hickory and their spouses, Rick Fahrer and Tanya Eddins. His memory will be cherished by his nephews, Adrian (Sarah) Fahrer, Harrison Fahrer and Zachary Eddins, as well as his niece Hannah Eddins. He is also survived by many members of the Eddins and Spencer families.
Friends and family recall his sharp wit, character impressions, and overall sense of humor. Growing up, John often read encyclopedias and had an uncanny recall. He loved bird watching and raising Zebra Finches. He enjoyed star gazing and studying the constellations through his telescope. John taught his nephews to fish on Lake Tillery and kindly took the fish off their hooks.
A celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home, 522 N. 2nd St. Albemarle, NC. The family will receive friends and family following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in his name to NAMI, the Lupus Foundation, Crossnore School, or a charity of your choice.
