John Buford Barnhardt Sr., of Concord, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife of 69 years, Martha Hayes ‘Marti’ Barnhardt, and their family. He was 87.
Born on September 21, 1937, in Concord, NC, John was the son of John Coy Barnhardt and Mary Lou Laton Barnhardt. He grew up in Concord, NC, where he developed the work ethic, humor, and determination that would define his life. John was a graduate of Concord High School, class of 1955, and of Central Piedmont Community College.
The love of John’s life was his wife, Martha, better known as Marti, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. Together they raised four children — John Jr. “Chip”, Kelly, Beth, and Lance — each of whom, along with their families, brought John immeasurable joy and pride. Family was always at the heart of who John was, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
John was the founder and CEO of Barnhardt Electric Company, a premier commercial climate controls firm that became well-known throughout the Carolinas and beyond. His leadership, skill, and straightforward manner earned him the respect of clients and colleagues alike. John’s work ethic and commitment to doing things right were legendary in the industry and are still commented on to this day by those who knew him. After retiring from the electrical business, John and Marti turned their shared love of antiques into a successful shop on Union Street in downtown Concord. Together, they built a reputation for spotting treasures and welcoming customers as friends.
A gifted athlete in his youth, John excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, once scoring more points than the entire opposing team in a basketball game. He later gave back to his community as a youth coach, where he encouraged kids to work hard, play fair, and enjoy the game. He was also a founder of the Cabarrus Optimist Club and was involved in other civic organizations.
An avid sportsman, John loved the outdoors. His passion for big-game hunting took him to Africa, Asia, Canada, Alaska, and many other places. What he brought home were not only trophies, but friendships and stories that lasted a lifetime — memories that will live on as part of his legacy.
Faith was the cornerstone of John’s life. He served as a deacon and was deeply involved in the ministries of his church, where he gave his time, energy, and heart to serving others. Whether leading, teaching, or simply lending a hand where needed, John’s quiet strength and steady presence reflected his deep belief in living out his faith through action.
Those who knew him will remember his grit, generosity, humor, and love for his family. He had a way of making people feel welcome, whether through a firm handshake, a word of encouragement, or a laugh at just the right moment.
John is survived by his wife, Martha Hayes Barnhardt; his son John “Chip” Buford Barnhardt, Jr. and his wife Teresa; daughter Kelly Barnhardt Hunt and partner Travis Ansley; daughter Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Vincent and her husband Joseph Vincent; Lance Edward Barnhardt and his wife Archana Manoharan; Their 7 grandchildren John Michael Barnhardt, Branden Barnhardt, John Vincent, Ben Vincent, Cassie Hunt, John Luke Barnhardt, and Supriya Barnhardt; and four great-grandchildren Adley Barnhardt, John Lin “Jace” Barnhardt, Avett Barnhardt, and Oakley Barnhardt.
