Jean Ewart Abernathy, 95, of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
Jean was born April 12, 1930 in Huntersville to the late Thomas Hugh Ewart Sr. and the late Ethel Azalee Bass Ewart. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Ellen Smith, Frances King, Thomas Ewart Jr., and Polly Tague.
Jean was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past Matron, past District Deputy Matron and past Grand Representative to Vermont. She was a life member of the ladies auxiliary of Wilson-Beatty VFW Post #9736 and Daughters of the Nile. When Jean was younger, she was a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed arranging flowers and doing crafts. She also loved playing BINGO. Jean loved watching birds, especially hummingbirds and red birds and watching game shows. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Jean was sharp as a tack and loved by all. Most of all, Jean was a devoted wife and doting mother and grandmother.
Survivors include beloved husband of 75 years, William Dwight Abernathy Sr.; son, William "Bill" Dwight Abernathy Jr. and wife, Bridget, of Concord; grandson, William Chase Abernathy and his wife, Courtney, of Mt. Pleasant; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her furbaby, Sadie Mae.
The graveside service in celebration of Jean's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens in Charlotte officiated by Monica Lewis.
