James "Jim" Michael Smith

James Michael Smith, 56, of Monroe, NC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Jim was born June 10, 1970 in Ohio to the late Dee Smith and the late Linda Weckesser.

He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Paul Motolik; and step-father, Howard Weckesser.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Paula Jo Smith of Monroe, NC; son, Carson Smith; son, Nolan Smith; daughter, Landry Smith; son, Jensen Smith; sister, Tracy Kohler and husband Mike; brother, Jeff Smith and wife Rebecca; brother, Rick Smith and wife Margot; mother-in-law Sharon Motolik; brother-in-law, Brian Motolik and wife Stephanie; sister-in-law, Shari Theis and husband Bryan; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Jim graduated from Smithville High School in 1988. He proudly served in the United States Army and the Ohio National Guard. Jim attended the University of Akron and Broadcasting School. Jim loved teaching and he had an extensive teaching career. He spent years teaching at Wayne County School Career Center; the Pioneer Career Center; Marvin Ridge High School; and most recently Piedmont High School. Throughout the years Jim coached cross country, track and basketball, and was loved by his students and athletes. Jim was a beloved Ohio sports fan, and faithfully pulled for THE Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and the Cleveland Indians. He also loved gardening, mowing, American History, building things, baking and cooking, traveling and lots of Dr. Pepper. Jim loved the Lord and attended Hopewell Baptist Church with his family. Jim will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him.
