James “Jim” Ray Griggs, 77, of Concord, passed away on July 3, 2026.

Jim was born on June 14, 1949, and spent his life serving others with honor, integrity, and unwavering dedication. He was a proud graduate of Concord High School class of 1968 and later earned his degree from UNC Charlotte. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served during the Vietnam War from 1968-1972 aboard the USS Enterprise. Following his military service, he devoted 30 years to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, faithfully serving his community with courage and compassion before retiring as Deputy Chief in 2001. His commitment to helping others was matched only by his devotion to his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Griggs and Margaret E. Warner Griggs, and by his brothers, Joe Griggs Jr. and Thomas Griggs.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah Anne Eury Griggs; his beloved daughter, Mackenzie Griggs Stephens, and her husband, Seth Stephens; his brother, Robert Griggs, and his wife, Karen Griggs; and many extended family members, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.

To know Jim was to know laughter. He was quick-witted, endlessly funny, and never missed an opportunity to crack a joke or make someone smile. He was hardworking, generous, faithful, and lived a life rooted in love for his family.

Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He had a lifelong love of cars and was always looking for his next one. Whether he was riding his mower or spending time on his tractor, he was happiest when he was home on the farm. Although he was known for saying, “No more pets,” every animal that found its way into the family quickly found a place in his heart. He always had a “Papa dollar” ready to give, a small gesture that reflected his generous heart. Above all else, Jim loved God, cherished his family, and lived a life grounded in both faith and love.

In 1997, Jim and Anne traveled halfway around the world to China to adopt their only daughter, Mackenzie. Becoming a father was one of the greatest joys of Jim’s life, and the love he had for his family was evident in everything he did. He was a devoted husband and a proud father.

While our hearts are broken by his passing, we are grateful for the years we were blessed to share with him. His laughter, strength, wisdom, steadfast faith, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the lives of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed every day, his legacy of service, kindness, and love will never be forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s life during a visitation on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.
