James B. Garnett, 70, of Harrisburg, N.C. passed away Monday, November 4, 2024 at Atrium Hospital in Concord , N.C.
James was born on July 22,1954 in Greenwood S.C. , the third son of John Grant Garnett and Carolyn Lyle Garnett . Jim is predeceased by his oldest brother John Grant Garnett, Jr., and both of his parents. Jim is preceded in death by the middle brother Robert Lyle Garnett. In 1958 the Garnett family moved to Charlotte N.C. and eventually settled in the Dilworth neighbor where he graduated from Myers Park High School.
After high school Jim held several jobs through the years but finally settled in at Celanese in Charlotte, N.C. for several years until an unfortunate accident ended his career and forced him into early retirement on disability.
Through the years Jim had several hobbies and interests, but Bowling and Darts were sports Jim excelled in earning him several awards and trophies through the years. Jim had a very strong connection and love for animals big and small. His dogs Sparky, Meathead and Sam will surely miss him. Through the years Jim had several animals he trained to do various tricks, and he was very good at it. When someone visited the house it was fairly normal for a dog to hit a button on a treat feeder or some sort of exotic bird flying around and talking.
Jim was one of the biggest USC Gamecock fans that one will ever know. It didn’t matter how bad of a year they were having you very rarely saw Jim without him wearing some sort of Gamecock apparel. He also loved family trips to the fish camp to eat some “dead cats” aka Catfish on a regular basis.
Jim was always present at the pool parties teaching his niece, nephews and neighborhood kids how to swim. Everyone loved Jim teaching them how to swim, but they all found out he saved their lives because he enjoyed throwing them in the pool followed by a cannon ball and dunking them to near death… But the kids loved it and always came back for more even his niece Jennifer that he called “Missy”, which was short for Miss Fancy Pants.
Everyone knew that playing cards with Jim was a bad decision due to his ability to count cards. Playing cards with him would only end up with you losing, getting mad and Jim laughing at you and asking if you wanted to try again. His mother Carolyn and his Great Aunt Louise banned him from playing cards with them due to them getting beat every game. They decided to ban him from their daily games to prevent them from physically ganging up on him.
Jim is survived by his older brother Robert L. Garnett, Robert’s son, Christopher Garnett, and his wife, Donna Garnett; their children, Grant Garnett, Adalee Garnett, Grayson and wife, Taylor Faulkner. Robert’s daughter Jennifer Garnett Field, and her children, Kristian Field and Kyler Field.
Jim is also survived by his predeceased older brother John G Garnett’s wife, Shirley H Garnett and their son Richard G Garnett and his children, Elizabeth A Garnett and Jessica M Garnett.
