Horace David Helms, 100 years of age, of Fairview, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe.
Mr. Helms was born May 15, 1914 in Union County to the late John Bunyan Helms and the late Hallie Hamilton Helms. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene Thomas and brothers, Hubert Helms and Warren Helms.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Monday, January 19, 2015 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2:30 pm at Hopewell Baptist Church, Legacy Campus in Monroe officiated by Rev. Dr. Lee Pigg. Burial will follow at the Fountain Hill United Methodist Cemetery at 9528 NC 218 East, Peachland.
Horace was the oldest member of Hopewell Baptist Church where he actively served for many years. He was a wood craftsman by trade. Horace loved life, purple martins, grandfather clocks, family, his front porch, woodwork, friends, bluegrass, sweet potatoes, gardening, collards, Model T Fords, and Evelyn. His life was rich with simple things.
Survivors include his loving wife of 80 years, Nancy Evelyn Parker Helms of the home; daughters, Lucille Love of Stanfield and Peggy (Jerry) Funderburk of Fairview; ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
