Gertrude Yates

Gertrude Elizabeth Yates, 91 years of age, of Concord, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at Pruitt Health at Town Center in Harrisburg.

Ms. Yates was born July 23, 1923 in North Carolina to the late Oscar Lee Lefler and the late Katherine Almond Lefler. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Melvin Julius Yates, four brothers and one sister.

She was a life long member of Westford United Methodist Church. She worked for 42 years at Cannon Mills Plant 9. She and her husband delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 plus years. She was an active participant in the Senior Olympics. She enjoyed visiting with the residents of Nursing homes and the shut ins. She also loved camping, working in her yard and the Carolina Tarheels.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord. The funeral service will be on Thursday at 1:00 pm at Westford United Methodist Church in Concord officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Rushing. Burial will follow at the West Concord Cemetery at 331 Union Cemetery Rd SW, Concord.

Survivors include daughter, Pat Yates Holland (Vance), granddaughter, Tonda Smith (Jeff), grandson, Chris Holland (Tina), granddaughter, Dee Jewell (Randy), 7 great grandchildren, Brad and Ben Smith, Hunter, Brett and Matt Holland, Adam and Katie Jewell, and 1 great great granddaughter, Zoey Smith.

Memorials may be made to the Westford UMC Seniors or Westford UMC Food Pantry.
