**Doris Elaine Prather Torrence**

December 5, 1931 – May 27, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Doris Elaine Prather Torrence, who peacefully departed this life on May 27, 2025, under the compassionate care of Hospice at Caremoor Retirement in Kannapolis, NC.

Doris was born in Charlotte, NC, to Thomas Edwin Jefferson Prather and Lola Mae Black Prather on December 5, 1931. She was the twelfth of sixteen children, growing up during the Great Depression, a time that instilled in her values of hard work and resilience as she helped support her family with love and care.

In 1947, Doris married Julius (Jay) Preston Torrence. The couple became cherished members of Chalmers Memorial A.R.P. Church in Charlotte. In 1949, they moved to the Newell community and joined Back Creek A.R.P. Church, where Doris remained an active member until health challenges required her to slow down.

Doris and Jay were blessed with five sons, one of whom, Michael Alexander Torrence, sadly predeceased her in 1972. A devoted homemaker, Doris found joy in cooking for her family, filling their summers with gardening and preserving seasonal produce for the winter months—a loving effort that brought the taste of summer to their table year-round.

Doris leaves behind her loving sons: Julius Preston Torrence Jr. (Jan), Eli Torrence, Robin Torrence (Cheryl), and Sean Torrence, along with four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will remember her warmth and nurturing spirit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius (Jay) Preston Torrence Sr., her son Michael, her parents, her in-laws, and thirteen of her siblings.

A private service will be held at a later date to honor Doris's life and legacy. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends.
