Doris Jane Hargett

Jul 10, 1932 — Aug 11, 2026

Charlotte North Carolina

Doris Jane Newell Hargett, 94, joined the saints of heaven and the cloud of witnesses on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. She passed peacefully with her son by her side.

She was born on Sunday, July 10, 1932, in Cabarrus County to the late John Homer Newell and Johnnie Lucille Blackwelder Newell.

Doris loved recounting her years of growing up at the Cabarrus County Home, where her grandfather managed the facility; and on Shady Lane in Concord. She attended Winecoff School and upon graduation in 1950, went to High Point College where she studied Business. Doris worked for several different companies in Charlotte before landing her long-held job with General Electric where she remained for 35 years before retiring. In November 1957, she married Harry Lee Hargett, and they celebrated fifty-five years of marriage until his death in 2012 from Alzheimer’s Disease. They had one son, Jeffrey Stephen, born in July 1962. Doris and Harry were devout Christians and loved working in their church, holding various roles at Wil-mar Park Baptist and then Kerr Memorial Baptist churches. Upon her death, Doris was a member of University City United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and enjoyed being part of her Sunday School class, the Covenant Keepers, and attending various activities in the church.

Heartfelt thanks goes to the many caregivers who have spent time with Doris; her doctors and nurses who have shared their gifts of healing; and the countless friends who have visited, called, sent cards and most importantly, prayed for comfort and peace. She will be remembered for her smile, her sunny disposition and always telling anyone, and everyone, "Come see me sometime!" and “You be careful out there, honey!”

Doris is survived by her son, Jeff Hargett of Charlotte; her sister, Jean Ann (Newell) Cox of Kannapolis; niece, Rae Ann (Mike) Stirewalt; nephews, James Clinton “Clint” Cox and John David Cox; great-nieces, Amber Cox (Chris) Little and Laura Stirewalt (Travis) Furr; great-nephews, Andrew Cox, Garrett Cox (Amanda), and Jon Stirewalt (Kelsie); great-great niece, Charlotte Jeanne Furr and great-great nephew, Lucas "Luke" Maxwell Furr. She also leaves behind many, many loving and cherished friends.
