Christine Carolyn Sykes

Christine Carolyn Sykes, 82, of Midland, NC, passed away on June 9, 2026, at Bethany Woods Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Albemarle, NC, after years of declining health.

Born on June 8, 1944, in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Ross McNealy Laughridge and Sarah Motes Laughridge. Christine was a devoted homemaker whose love for her family guided every part of her life. During the Christmas season, she enjoyed working at Kmart in Charlotte, NC, where she brought warmth and kindness to everyone she met.

Her faith in the Lord was steadfast and evident throughout her courageous battle with cancer and dementia. Christine had a deep, lifelong desire to care for others-something rooted in her strong sense of family and heritage.

Christine is survived by her son, Rev. Daryl Sykes (Lisa); two granddaughters, Jessica (Rich) Kuiken and Daphne Sykes; one great-grandson who was the light of her life; her sister, Brenda Huffstetler; and her brother, Charles (Carol) Laughridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross McNealy Laughridge and Sarah Motes Laughridge; her husband, Edwin Sykes; her brother, William Laughridge; and two great-grandsons.

The family will be served by Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland, NC. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service in the chapel. A graveside service for family and friends will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Gethsemane Cemetery in Charlotte, NC.
