Charles Edward Akin, 81 years of age, of New London, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his residence in New London. Charles was born June 2, 1932 in Carroll County, Georgia to the late Lewis Akin and the late Ruby Wallis Akin. Charles proudly served his country in the Korean conflict and was a Georgia Tech alumni. He retired from Gulf Oil/BP after 29 years. After retirement he worked with Service Distributing in Albemarle for 13 years before retiring again. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Albemarle and a teacher of the Saints Sunday School Class and was an active Deacon at one time. He served eight years as Commissioner on the Board of the Town of New London, and he has also served on the Pfeiffer-North Stanly Water board. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service officiated by Dr. Roger Thomas and Rev. Dan Freeman will be at 2:00 PM, Sunday, May 18, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Albemarle, 202 North Second Street, Albemarle, NC. The burial will follow at the New London Cemetery, 331 Spring Street, New London, NC. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Free Akin of New London; daughter, Pamela H. Purser and husband Vone of Kannapolis; grandson, Lindsay Hanners of Raleigh; granddaughter, Ashley and Jon Bullin of Wilmington; three brothers, Wyndell Akin and wife Pat of Rome, GA, Dan Akin and wife Chris of Macon, GA, and John Akin and wife Ella of Chapel Hill; one sister, Marilouis Hudgins and husband Mike of Washington, DC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28002, and First Baptist Church of Albemarle, 202 N. Second St., Albemarle, NC 28001. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Akin family.
