Bobbye Wayne Beckner of Harrisburg, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on November 14, 1941, in Clayton, New Mexico, to the late William Paul Beckner of Texline, Texas, and Emma Lee Webster Beckner of Clayton, New Mexico.
If you were fortunate enough to know Bob, you'd know that baseball was one of the great passions of his life. From an early age, he dedicated himself to the game-playing throughout his youth and for two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1961, he took that love on the road, chasing his dream and traveling the country as a professional ballplayer.
His career spanned 695 games, beginning in 1961 with the Pocatello Bannocks. Over the years, he played for the Eugene Emeralds, Thomasville Hi-Toms, Orlando Twins-being recognized as all-star 3rd baseman for the FSL, the Wilson Tobs, and the Charlotte Hornets-helping them clinch the pennant during the 1969 season. He then joined the AAA Evansville Triplets and wrapped up his professional career with the Pittsfield Senators.
After hanging up his glove, Bob returned to Charlotte-a city he loved and chose as his permanent home, There, he built a successful career in logistics, contributing his skills to several respected companies until retirement. But his love for the game never faded. Bob continued playing in men's All-American softball tournament leagues, helping win championships well into his 50s, Baseball wasn' t just a sport to him-it was in his blood.
Beyond the diamond, he made the most of life. Spending weekends on trails-enduro racing with friends or teeing off for a round of golf. In his older years his greatest joy came from the sidelines, cheering on his grandchildren with unwavering pride.
Above all, Bob was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a deeply cherished grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cynthia "Dale" Harbin Beckner. He is survived by his daughter, Brandy Beckner Green, and her husband Rodney; along with his treasured grandchildren, Emma and Jake Green. He held a special place in his heart for his extended family through Rodney, touched deeply by the love, kindness, and enduring friendship they shared with him through the years.
Bob's legacy will live on in the lives he so deeply touched-with kindness, laughter, strength, and a love for the game.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg is serving the Beckner family.
