Rachel Smith

Rachel Hatley Smith, 92, passed away Monday, February 18, 2019 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC. She was loved by all who knew her.

Rachel was born August 11, 1926 in Albemarle, NC to the late William V. Hatley and Rosa Harwood Hatley. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Reece L. Smith, Sr. before his death in 2013; daughter, Judy Smith Shue; sister, Letha Hatley; brothers, Raymond J. Hatley and William V. Hatley, Jr.; granddaughter, Linda Cress; great-granddaughter, Tiffany Cress and great-grandson, Alex Cress.

She was loving wife, mother and grandmother that always had time for family.

Rachel retired from Brookwood Beauty Salon, the business she owned and operated for 52 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Concord, NC. During her many active years in Christian work, Rachel taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, worked with WMU and Youth Ministries.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 1 - 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Concord prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jesse Watkins officiating. The burial will follow the service at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, NC.

Her loving survivors include two sons, Reece L. (Phyllis) Smith, Jr. of Kinston, NC, and Rev. James S. (Connie) Smith of Dillon, SC; son-in-law, Stephen Shue of Concord; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews.
