Johnny Helms

February 18, 1946 — August 30, 2019

Concord

Johnny Alan Helms, 73, passed away unexpectedly Friday, August 30, 2019 at his beloved Virginia mountain home.

Alan was born February 18, 1946 to the late G. C. and Isabell Vanderburg Helms.  In one month, he and his wife Frances, would have celebrated 50 years together.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Scott and wife, Jodi and their children, Grant and Holly, and Keith and wife, Karen and their two children Sawyer and Claire.  Also surviving is his brother, Phil.

Alan was currently employed by Morrison Brothers in Concord.  Over 51 years, Alan built a career selling building materials, specializing in masonry products.  Alan was a highly respected icon in the building industry, fondly referred to by some as "The Legend", (he humbly says only because he's been around so long), but those who worked with him know his reputation was forged by his knowledge of the business, an incredible work ethic, and an unmatched devotion to his customers, employers, and friends.

Alan was so proud of his marriage and his beautiful family.  Alan's quiet strength, his wisdom and gentle spirit will be forever missed by his family and friends.  Big Al loved trees, flowers, old stuff, bluegrass music, Christmas, and our little dog, Lacy.

The family will receive friends Friday, September 6, 2019 from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM at Westford United Methodist Church, Hwy. 49, Concord, NC.  A memorial service officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Rushing will be held at Westford on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 3:00 PM.

The family would like to thank the Lead Mines Virginia Rescue Squad, William Watts, caretaker of the farm, Adam Keene, Virginia CPO, and Deputy Peyton Brewer for their assistance and kindness in Alan's last moments.

Memorials may be directed to Lead Mines Rescue Squad, 1057 Fort Chiswell Rd., Max Meadows, VA 24360 or to Westford United Methodist Church, 273 NC 49, Concord, NC 28025.
