Billie Wayne Blackwelder, 79, of Concord, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at home with family by his side.
Mr. Blackwelder was born January 1, 1940 in Cabarrus County to the late Lewis Franklin Blackwelder and the late Elma King Miller Blackwelder. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Gene, Carl, and Hoyte Blackwelder.
Mr. Blackwelder was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam and in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was the first member of his family to attend and graduate from college. Mr. Blackwelder received his undergraduate degree from Campbell University and his master's in education from UNCC. He taught elementary education at Odell, Wolf Meadow, and J.N. Fries for 30 years. Mr. Blackwelder was an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Concord. He enjoyed hanging out with his buddies at What-a-Burger and Marvin's Farmhouse in Mount Pleasant. He loved all animals, but especially his multitude of cats. Mr. Blackwelder was a beloved father, brother and Poppa and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include daughter, Valerie Kolczynski (Alfonso Rattrovo) of Concord, NC; three sisters, Martha Bolick, Mae Pope (Carl), and Elaine Miller; brother, Lewis Blackwelder (Maria); grandsons, Olin Kolczynski, Justin Rattrovo, and Cory Rattrovo; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, December 5, 2019 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord. The funeral service will be on Friday at 2:00 pm at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 6986 Gold Hill Rd, Concord, officiated by Rev. Allen Lefler. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
